Scriptural Evidence

  • God is Always One, Never Three or Three-in-One

Thousands upon thousands of singular personal pronouns are used to describe God.  It is not an assumption, but a fact that the Bible presents God as a singular person.  Furthermore, Jesus says that the greatest commandment is to understand that God is "one Lord" and to love him (Mark 12:29).  Nowhere does any Scripture attest that God is three, three-in-one, or anything more than a simple one.

    Deuteronomy 4:35
"YHWH, He is God; there is no other besides Him."

    Deuteronomy 32:39
"See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me."

    Deuteronomy 6:4
"Hear, O’ Israel, YHWH is our God, YHWH is one."

    Isaiah 46:9
"I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me."

    Nehemiah 9:6
    "You alone are YHWH…"

    Malachai 2:10
"Do we not all have one Father?  Has not one God created us?"

    Mark 12:29
"And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, “Hear, O Israel; YHWH our God is one Lord.”

    John 5:44
“…you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God.”

    Romans 3:30
"… Since indeed God is one."

    1 Corinthians 8:6
"…for us there is but one God, the Father."

    Galatians 3:20
"Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one."

    James 2:19
"You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder."

  • Jesus Says the Father is the Only One Who is True God, While Jesus is Someone Else

We are instructed by Christ to beleive in two distinct entities, one who is God, and the other who is someone else.  God, for Jesus and his Apostles, is always "the Father."

    John 17:1-3
Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father… This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

    John 14:1
Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; Believe also in me.”

    John 8:17-18
I am one witness, and my Father who sent me is the other."

    1 Corinthians 8:6
"Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we exist through Him."

    1 Timothy 2:5
"For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."

  • Jesus Has a God

Jesus cannot be the one and only God himself and also truly have a God the way the disciples do.

    John 20:17
Jesus said to her, "Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'

    Revelation 3:2
Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.

    Revelation 3:12
Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name.

    Mark 15:34
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

    Ephesians 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

    Ephesians 1:17
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

    Romans 15:6
…so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    1 Peter 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!

    2 Corinthians 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort…

  • God is Not a Man, Jesus is a Man

God tells us plainly that he is not a man, nor the son of man.  But these are some of the Bible's favorite descriptions for Jesus.

    Numbers 23:19
God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent...

    Hosea 11:9
I will not execute My fierce anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again.  For I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, And I will not come in wrath.

    1 Samuel 15:29
Also the Glory of Israel will not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind.

    Job 9:32
“For He is not a man as I am that I may answer Him, that we may go to court together.”

    Acts 2:22
“Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.

    Acts 2:23
This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.

    Acts 17:31
For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.

    John 8:40
“but now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God

    Luke 22:69
"But from now on, the son of man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."

    1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

    Romans 5:15
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man (Adam) how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!

  • Jesus Prayed to God

How and why would Jesus pray to God if he is God?  The Bible says Jesus prayed with loud tears to “God", and "God" heard his prayers because of his piety.

    Luke 6:12
One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.

    Hebrews 5:7
In the days of his flesh, he offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his devotion to God.

    Mark 1:35
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

    Matthew 26:39
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

    Matthew 11:25-26
At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,"

    Matthew 14:23
After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.

    Luke 22:32
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.

    John 12:27
"Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!"

  • God Cannot Be Tempted, But Jesus was Tempted in Every Way, as we are

The Bible clearly tells us that Jesus was tempted, and was tempted in every way like we are.  Since the Bible teaches that God cannot be tempted, if Jesus is God, then Jesus was not truly tempted.  To be tempted means there is the possibility that evil may be chosen, which is impossible for God.

    James 1:13
“… for God cannot be tempted by evil”.

    Hebrews 4:15
“For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.”

    Luke 4:2
… for forty days, being tempted by the devil.

  • God Cannot Die, Jesus Died

God alone has inherent immortality.  If God died, the universe would collapse!  The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus died.  It does not say that only a part or an aspect of Jesus died.  It even says that at one point, death had "mastery" over Jesus.  Could death ever rule over one who was truly Almighty God?  It was not merely an abstract "human nature" that died; the Bible says "the Son" himself died.

    Romans 1:23
“and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.”

    1 Timothy 6:16
    “God, who alone possesses immortality…”

    Mark 15:44-45
Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.  And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

    1 Corinthians 15:3
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance; that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.

    Romans 5:10
while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son

    Revelation 1:18
I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

    Romans 6:9
Knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.

  • Jesus is Subordinate to God

The Doctrine of the Trinity says that the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are co-equal.  The Bible says Jesus is not equal with God, but is subordinate to him, even after Jesus' exaltation to God's right hand.

    John 14:28
… The Father is greater than I.

    1 Corinthians 11:3
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

    1 Cor 3:22-23
whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God.

    1 Cor 15:24,27-28
Then the end will come, when he [Jesus] hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power… For he [God] “has put everything under his [Jesus'] feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him [Jesus], it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him [God] who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

  • Jesus Does Not Do His Own Will

Jesus submits to the will of "God"

    Luke 22:42
… not my will but Yours be done.

    John 5:30, John 8:42
"… I do not seek my own will, but the will of Him who sent me..." "God sent me."

    Mark 14:36
"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me.  Yet not what I will, but what you will."

  • Jesus Does Not Have Inherent Power or Authority

Jesus consistently claims to have no power, no authority, and no initiative of his own.  Both he and the Apostles teach that Jesus was "God", not Jesus, who was the originator of his works.

    John 8:28
I do nothing of my own initiative.”

    John 5:30
By myself I can do nothing…”

    John 5:27
“and He (God) gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.”

    Matthew 28:18
“all authority has been given to me…”

    John 14:10
…the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

    Acts 2:22
"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know..."

    Acts 17:31
"For he (God) has set a day when he (God) will judge the world with justice through the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead."

  • Everything Had to be Made Subject to Christ

The New Testament says that before he was exalted, he was beneath the angels.  But after God raised Jesus from the dead, God subjected all things to Jesus, and now the only thing not subjected to Christ is God himself.

    Ephesians 1:22
And He (God) put all things in subjection under His (Jesus) feet, and gave Him (Jesus) as head over all things to the church, which is His body.

    1 Corinthians 15:27
For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him.

    Psalm 110:1
Yahweh says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

    Hebrews 2:9
but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

    Acts 2:36
Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: GOD has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!

  • Jesus Was Given a Name HIgher Than the One He Had

The Bible says Jesus was given a name above every name because of his obedience to God.

    Phillipians 2:8-11
… He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  For this reason God also highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him a name which is above every name, That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

    Hebrews 1:4
So he has become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

    Romans 14:9
For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

    Acts 2:36
Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: GOD has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!

  • Jesus Hands the Kingdom over to God

If Jesus is God himself coming to rule the world in the Kingdom, why would he hand the Kingdom over to God in a final act of submission so that "God" could rule over everything including Jesus?

    1 Corinthians 15:24-28
"then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power.  For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.  The last enemy that will be abolished is death.  For “He has put all things in subjection under His feet”.  But when He says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to HimWhen all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all."

  • Jesus is the Second Adam

The New Testament refers to Jesus as the Second Adam, or the Last Adam, and even says that Adam was a prototype of the Messiah.  The Unitarian position easily explains this comparison: Jesus was ontologically exactly like Adam, who was the first human son of God (Luke 3:38).  Adam was the son of God who failed, Jesus is the one who was victorious.  God's solution to the problem of sin and death was another Adam, God's legal option according to Romans 5:12-19.  The Christian story is essentially the tale of two Adams, one who disobeys and loses the Kingdom, the other who obeys and reclaims it.

    Luke 3:38
"…who was the son of Seth, who was the son of Adam, who was the son of God."

    Romans 5:14
"Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come.  But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many.  And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin.  For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification.  If, because of the one man’s trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.  Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all.  For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous."

    1 Corinthians 15:21-22 (NRSV)
"For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being.  For as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ."

  • Jesus is Exactly Like His Brothers

The Bible says that Jesus is like us in every way, and actually had to be in order to make atonement for our sins.  But if Jesus has two natures or two ininds and two wills as orthodox Trinitarianism demands, then Jesus is not like us in every way.  Furthermore, God doesn't have brothers or fellows, but Jesus clearly does.

    Hebrews 2:17
"Therefore, he had to be made like his brethren in all things, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people."

    Romans 8:29
"For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brethren"

    Psalm 45:7
"Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows"

  • Jesus Belongs to the Creation of God

Jesus is supposedly an uncreated God with no beginning.  But the Bible says that Jesus is a member of Creation; he is called the chief of all God's created things.

    Colossians 1:15
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation."

    Revelation 3:14
"To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God, says this..."

  • Jesus Learned and Had to Be Taught

Jesus is supposedly fully God, and therefore omniscient.  But the Bible demonstrates that Jesus had to be told things that he didn't know, and that Jesus even learned lessons that made him wiser.  Jesus even admits that God knows somethings that he doesn't.

    Hebrews 5:8-9
"Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.  And, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him."

    John 8:28
"… I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me."

    Matthew 24:36
"But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone."

    John 8:40
"but now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God."

    John 4:1
"Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing…"

    Luke 2:52
"And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."
